Background on Sorcerers of the Magic Kingdom:
Opening in 2012, SotMK is an interactive game played within, of course, the Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort. You are one of Merlin’s newest apprentices and he needs your help to keep Hades and his villainous friends from overtaking the Magic Kingdom. You’ll help out Merlin by travelling across the various themed lands inside the MK, with the exception of Tomorrowland, and go head to head in battle with the villains. However, fear not! You won’t have to face battle along as different Disney pals will appear throughout your missions and help guide you throughout your quest.
How do I get started?
Visit the Firehouse on Main Street, U.S.A. or go behind Ye Old Christmas Shoppe in Liberty Square to a SotMK headquarters. Be sure you have your admission ticket with you, whether that is a physical ticket or your MagicBand. There a Cast Member will help you get started by scanning the first person’s ticket and activating a Portal Key Card for them. Do not lose your Portal Key Card as it is essentially a memory card and also opens each new portal you visit. In addition to this card, each person with a ticket who chooses to participate in SotMK will receive a deck of 5 random cards and a map with the location of different portals marked on them.
NOTE: Parents, if you do not want to play your own game but rather watch your child and/or play with them, inform your CM that you will only need 1 key card. You will still be able to obtain your daily deck when you visit a SotMK headquarters and can pass them on to your little one to use if you wish.
Things to be aware of:
- It is likely people will approach you during gameplay! Don’t be overly alarmed if a stranger approaches you while you are waiting for your turn at the portal or exiting a portal. There is a very strong SotMK community dedicated to obtaining full sets of the cards and trading cards to get rid of multiples. These community incudes children as young as 5 and adults as old as seniors.
- As mentioned, each person with a ticket of admission may claim their deck of 5 SotMK cards so long as they physically show up to one of the headquarters to do so. However, you do not have to stay in the park after obtaining your cards. For example, my family and I always get the Park Hopper option so we would visit the MK, grab our decks, and then continue with the day we had planned. Later in our stay or in the day we would go back to the MK and play or trade.
- There are 3 levels of difficulty, but you will start on easy where card selection doesn’t matter. As you progress to medium and hard levels, each spell will have a different level of effectiveness of different villains. You will also have to start using multiple cards at once and they will most likely need to be levelled up (which requires more play time).
2015 Holiday Cards:
Each year since SotMK has opened, there have been 2 exclusive holiday cards: a Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party card and a Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas card. To obtain these cards, you must have a ticket to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party respectively to present at the headquarters. You can only obtain these cards on the day your ticket is active for.
This past Halloween’s card was named “Minnie Mouse’s Costume Chaos.” It features Minnie, and her friends Clarabelle Cow and Daisy Duck, dressed as witches.
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party SotMK card 2015
Since the Halloween season is over and Mickey’s Very Christmas Party has begun at WDW starting on November 8th, also known as the day this card was first available, the spotlight is on this year’s SotMK holiday card! This year it is “Olaf’s Snowgies.” You can pick up a card at either SotMK headquarters (the Firehouse on Main Street, U.S.A. or go behind Ye Old Christmas Shoppe in Liberty Square).
Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party SotMK card 2015
Last year the holiday card was “Elsa’s Icey Shield.” Seeing as Disney’s film “Frozen” was a huge hit and Elsa’s even getting her own attraction in Norway because of it, I’m not surprised to see another “Frozen” themed holiday card this year. I love “Frozen” and the fun weapons these cards have used, but I also wish classical characters, mostly the Fab 5, were featured within the first years of SotMK. In my personal opinion it would create more feelings of nostalgia, much like when Huey, Dewy and Louie were featured on the Christmas card in 2013. The first thing that came to mind was “Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas” which has become a tradition to watch each holiday season.
